With reference to previous correspondence on the subject of the seizure of the Yao Faing coal-yard by the Viceroy at Canton, I had the honour to communicate to Y.E. on the 11th instant the contents of a telegram which the Board had received from the Viceroy showing that the account books which had been impounded disclosed a state of affairs different from that described in Y.E.'s notes.
I requested therefore that Kuang Hsun Chu, the accountant of the coal-yard, might be sent to Canton for examination.
On the same day Y.E. wrote communicating Mr. Consul-General Scott's reports as to the guard-boats which were in charge of the coalyard, and requesting that explicit orders might be telegraphed to the Viceroy to hand over the coal to the custody of H.M. Consul-General.
As regards the guard-boats and soldiers set in charge of the coal yard, this Board have the honour to inform Y.E. of the contents of a telegram just received from the Viceroy. H.E. states that the reason for placing these guards on the coalyard was because of its isolated situation which exposed the coal to the possibility of theft, after the departure of the employees who left as soon as the attachment was announced. H.E. points out that this whole case turns on the point whether Chan Jung...
